Reflection

I got back from winter break and the next day went into the theater to talk to Clare about how to get started for Notes from the Field. By the time I had gotten back, I had already looked at the light plots and channel hookup and made some adjustments. It took us roughly two weeks to strike everything from the Dance Concert and re-hang, circuit, patch, and make sure everything worked for lights. Sound was simpler as there was not a lot of set up. The tech process was of course slightly rocky but I think that having Lee tell Greta and I what to program was a wonderful way to teach Greta to use the light board and make her feel more comfortable with it. I understand that would not be something to do during the whole tech process but I do think a day or two of it would be very beneficial. I did wake up panicked about the light board reading those texts and must say I am happy with myself for saving it on the flash drive. That was a bit of a stressful morning but I think tech went smoothly overall. After tech, things were running very smoothly for the performances. I was called twice I believe during the entire run and did not need to come in to fix anything before any performances.

The Monday after Notes we had to immediately start setting up for Legally Blonde. The week of closing I had printed the light plots and labeled which lights should be struck and what else needed to be hung. The tension grid was relatively simple but the upstage was a very different story. There was so little of the Upstage being used for Blonde, so there was a lot that was struck from Notes. On Monday we immediately started striking and hanging as we needed everything to be done that week as the next week was Spring Break and the Wednesday we got back we were focusing. Monday we had struck the upstage and completely hung the tension grid. Tuesday we had almost all of the upstage hung and finished circuiting the grid. Wednesday we finished hanging upstage and got all the upstage stuff in the board; Thursday we circuited the entire upstage. On Friday we channel checked and fixed the things we needed to, so when we came back Monday all we had left to do was sort and put in gel. This was a VERY stressful week and I was at the theatre for many hours everyday. There were definitely things that I did not need to be there for but I just wanted to stay to make sure that everything I wanted to get done got done. When I was going home on Friday after we had got everything working I was so happy!! I was very proud of myself for getting that all organized and done in such a short time. We focused a lot more on sound when we got back from break and that was also a frustrating process with all the mics needed in the pit and the mics on stage with a new board was chaotic. Eventually we had everything working!! We went into tech strong but even that first day I was running around practically the entire time and did that for the first two days. Then we were in the grove of it all a bit more and I was more waiting to see if anyone needed me. There were a lot of requirements for tech and it was stressful but again I was very proud of myself for how I handled the tech process and while I was scared of Clare leaving I was confident that Duncan and I would be able to handle it all.

Near the end of Legally Blonde the work studies started getting everything ready to hang the rep plot. We had a quick turn around and once again it was stressful but again, we got it all done and it happened very smoothly! I was definitely going into work more this week to ensure that everything was in order and because there were days where Duncan had to leave early to go to his other job so I needed to be there to lead the other work studies and even a couple electrics classes. It was a very reassuring thing to do in the sense that I was fully able to lead them all and teach them. It was one of those times where I realized that I knew more than I thought I did, there were definitely some calls to Duncan but overall we were very good at trouble shooting. Clare leaving was very sad and scary but it did help me realize my own abilities.

This was an incredible role and experience this semester. I learned so much and it made me feel more confident in my abilities more and more throughout the semester. It was challenging of course and nerve-racking, but overall very cool to be able to do all that I did. I really hope there are more students in the future that want to take on this role because I think it is an amazing experience!
