The Full Story

OJ Stage Management

I was an Assistant Stage Manager for Orange Julius this fall and had an absolutely amazing experience. I learned so much and made such amazing connections. This has made me realize that this is something I would like to try and pursue in the future.

We had a very quick start into this process and while it was a bit chaotic it also made it quite fun. There was so much that we needed to get done in such a short amount of time and I think that little bit of pressure was very exciting to work with. I love this photo because none of us had ever done a room tape out before and we were very much just winging it and we had so much fun. This was a relatively simple tape out as we really just had to tape out rectangles and lines, but it took us a minute to wrap our brains around it, but I can't imagine having so much fun taping lines with any other people. I was very lucky to have this stage management team to make this experience so special.

At the start of this process I was a little nervous since I had not done stage management in any capacity before but I was ecstatic that I was given the opportunity. I was a little timid at first and did not quite know what questions to ask or when I could jump in with information but as the process went along I gained more confidence. I understood the process and the way things were working more so I was able to ask and do what I needed to with more certainty.

We of course ran into a few challenges and bumps but I think we had a really great cast and crew to help work through those when needed. Everyone there created a really good atmosphere and we had a really great pre-show process. It was very interesting to really see the entire stage management aspect of shows. I learned how to write rehearsal reports, make a run sheet, and how to manage a theatre before show time; all of which I was very excited to learn more about. It also helped me become more organized and helped with time management. As you know, there was a lot to juggle with the show and school but having to do both greatly helped me in that area.
